Since its establishment in 1989, ACMHS have developed relevant partnerships and steadfastly provided culturally sensitive and appropriate services to African and African Caribbean people, carers and families who directly or indirectly suffer mental health problems.
In 1996, ACMHS received an award in recognition for services to the community, from the Moss Side and Hulme Youth Challenge.
In 1998, ACMHS was invited to the membership of the Independent Reference Group (IRG) initiated by Paul Boateng, the then Parliamentary Under Secretary of State, to address re-provision and improvements to mental health services.
In 1999 ACMHS achieved the Community Legal Services Quality Mark (CLS) in “General Help with Casework” enabling the organisation to give advice to a nationally recognised standard.
In February 2000, ACMHS negotiated with Trafford General Hospital, short-term secondments of its ward staff and social workers to raise cultural awareness amongst staff, exchange good practice and strengthen partnerships.
In March 2000, the partnership of Trafford South Asian Mental Health Project, Trafford Social Services Department, Health Authority and ACMHS delivered a successful conference entitled “Ifeoma Dekh Baal” held at Lancashire County Cricket Club, Old Trafford.
ACMHS received a “Highly Commended” award in the Whitbread Volunteer Action Award 2000, in recognition of outstanding service to the community.
